| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| adaptation | A trait of an organism that has changed to adapt to environment through natural selection. |
| alternation of generations | They cycle where the plant alternates between gametophyte and sporophyte stage. |
| colonial | A type of multicellular algae that forms from multiple alga grouping in a colonized form. |
| dicots | Also known as dicotyledons. As the name suggests are plants that have two cotyledons or embryonic leaves. Compare monocots. |
| enclosed seeds | Product of angiosperms where the ovules in the seed are enclosed by the ovary. |
| flowers | Sexual reproduction organ of angiosperms; contains the pistil and stamen of the plant. |
| fruit | The seed bearing structure of angiosperms. They have particular taste to attract animals who consume fruit then discard the seeds that were not digested. |
| leaves | Extended system of vascular tissues that function as a primary part of photosynthesis and transpiration. |
| monocots | Also known as monocotyledons. As the name suggests are plants that have one cotyledon or embryonic leaf. Compare diocots. |
| multicellular | An organism that is made of more than one cell. Any complicated organisms, including mammals, ferns, etc., are multicellular. Compare unicellular |
| pollen | Fine powder containing microgametophyte or the male gametophyte of a seeded vascular plant. Functions to protect the microgametophyte when it moves from the stamen to the pistil of the plant. |
| roots | An organ of a vascular plant, normally underground, that holds the plant upright and absorbs moisture and nutrients from underground. |
| seeds | An embryotic plant that is covered by a seed cover and usually has available food source. It is the product of fertilization of a vascular seed plant. |
| stems | An organ of a vascular plant that holds the plant straight. It also has vascular tissues to transport water and nutrients across different parts of the plant, from the root to the leaf. |
| unicellular | An organism that is made of one cell. Also, and algae that is singular and by itself. E.g. Amoeba Compare multicellular |
| vascular tissue | Tissues that transport water and nutrients throughout the organism. There are two types, Xylem and Phloem, where Xylem transports water and mineral and Phloem transports food and nutrients. |
