Rocks and Minerals

This study stack will help you learn about Rocks and Minerals.

TermDefinition
weathering the process in which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by ice, water, wind, changes in temperature, plants, animals, or by chemicals.
lava hot, liquid rock above the Earth's surface
cementation the heating of two substances in contact in order to effect some change in one of them
extrusive rock igneous rock that has cooled OUTSIDE of the Earth
mineral a non-living, solid material that was formed in nature and has particles arranged in a repeating pattern
crystallization the process in which magma cools and hardens into rock
luster a property of minerals that is used to describe how a mineral reflects light
hardness a measure of how easily a mineral can be scratched according to the Mohs scale
magma hot, liquid rock below the Earth's surface
metamorphic rock rock that is formed by adding heat, pressure, or chemicals to another rock
sediment small pieces of broken down rock
crystal a clear, transparent mineral or glass resembling ice
erosion the process by which the surface of the Earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc.
streak a portion or layer of something, distinguished by color or nature from the rest
geologist the scientific study of the origin, history, structure, and composition of the Earth
igneous rock rocks that have formed from magma that has cooled
cleavage a physical property of some minerals that causes them to break along smooth, flat surfaces
intrusive rock igneous rock that has cooled INSIDE the Earth
rock cycle a continuous process by which rocks are created, changed form one form to another, destroyed, and then formed again
deposition the process in which moving sedimentary material slows down, or from ice that melts
sedimentary rock rock that is formed by deposition of mineral or organic matter deposited by water, air, or ice
lithification the process of turning sediments into rock
compacted joined or packed together
characteristic distinctive attributes or properties of a thing
classify to put in groups with common properties or characteristics
clastic rock a rock composed of broken pieces of older rocks
conduct to serve as a pathway for electricity or heat to pass through
density mass per unit volume
inorganic not alive
nonfoliated a metamorphic rock that does not appear to be layered
magnetism the property of being magnetic: the power of attraction
nonrenewable not able to be restored, replaced or recommenced
property a quality, attribute, characteristic, or distinctive feature of anything,
rock mineral matter of variable composition, consolidated or unconsolidated, assembled in masses or considerable quantities in nature, as by the action of heat or water

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
