Weathering and Soil
Weathering and Soil Review
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the difference between weathering and erosion? | Weathering is the process of rocks being broken down either physically or chemically. Erosion is when a rock is move to a new location by wind, water, or ice. |
| What is the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering? | Mechanical weathering is when rock is broken down physically, but not changed. Chemical weathering is when rock is broken down chemically. This changes the rocks composition. |
| What are the agents (types) of mechanical weathering? Explain. | Abrasion-is the grinding away of rocks which gets carried away by water, ice, or wind. |
| What are the agents (types) of mechanical weathering? Explain. | Freezing & Thawing-is when water freezes in the crack of a rock and then it expands soon to break. |
| What are the agents (types) of mechanical weathering? Explain. | Heating & Cooling-a rock is heated by the sun. The rock starts to flake when it's heated by the sun. When it rains the rock with crack and soon break. |
| What are the agents (types) of mechanical weathering? Explain. | Animal Actions-Animals dig into soil and while they are digging they start to break and crack rocks. |
| What are the agents (types) of mechanical weathering? Explain. | Plant Growth-when a plant grows the roots get bigger and bigger. If rocks are in the way of roots the roots will continue to grow and will crack the rocks. |
| What is humus? | Humus is the organic material which is formed by decomposed leaves and other decomposed plants. Humus is also made by decomposers |
| What are the agents (types) of chemical weathering? Explain. | Water-water can dissolve rock down. |
| What are the agents (types) of chemical weathering? Explain. | Oxygen-oxygen and water mixed together makes rock rust. This is called oxidation. |
| What are the agents (types) of chemical weathering? Explain. | Carbon Dioxide-dissolves in water which makes a week acid. This acid brakes down the rock. |
| What are the agents (types) of chemical weathering? Explain. | Living Organisms-plant roots grow. When this happens it gets into the crack of a rock. The roots will grow causing the rock to crack more. The rock with then eventually break. |
| What are the agents (types) of chemical weathering? Explain. | Acid Rain-air pollution causes acid to form in clouds. When this happens clouds get filled with acid. When it rains the cloud will rain acid rain. |
| Explain the horizons of soil? | Litter- litter is leaves and twigs and other stuff on top of horizon A. |
| Explain the horizons of soil? | Horizon A- also know as top soil. Is crumbly, dark brown, soil that is a mixture of humus, clay, and other materials. |
| Explain the horizons of soil? | Horizon B- also known as subsoil. Consists of clay and other particles from Horizon A due to leaching. Horizon B is a reddish color. |
| Explain the horizons of soil? | Horizon C-consist of weathered rock. Also has a little humus from Horizon B due to leaching. Horizon C is a light brown color. |
| Explain the horizons of soil? | This layer is bedrock. Bedrock is just rock that hasn't been weathered yet. |
