Waves, Tides, and Cu
| Term | Definition |

| Shoreline | where the land meets the ocean |
| Longshore Current | water movement going parallel to the shoreline that moves sand and water from one location to another |
| Barrier Island | sea islands along a coastline that protect the mainland from waves, tides, and severe storms |
| Inlet | indentations along the coastline where tides affect the flow of water; channels in the inlet often interconnect and somewhere provide access to the open ocean |
| Waves | regular up-and-down movement of water, often caused by wind • Crest – the highest part of a wave • Trough – the lowest part of a wave |
| Breaker | a wave that curls over and falls |
| Tsunami | a giant sea wave caused by an underwater earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide |
| Currents | streams of water that continually flow through the ocean moving large amounts of water from one place to another |
| Surface Currents | streams of water caused by the movement of Earth and the direction of winds; some are warm and others are cold water |
| Tides | daily changes in the level of Earth’s oceans • High tide – when the water level is at its highest point • Low tide – when the water level is at its lowest point |
