Matter Is anything that has mass and volume.
Atom The smallest part of an element.
Electrons Negativlly charged particles.
Protons Positivly charged particles inside an object's nucleus.
Nuetron A particle that has no electric charge.
Atomic number The number of protons in an atom.
Mass number The average number of protons and nuetrons in an atom.
Compund A substance that contains two or more elements chemically combined.
Isotopes Atoms of some of the same chemical element with a different mass number.
Molecule The smallest part of a compound that still has all the properties of that compound.
Mineral A substance found deep within a rock.
Native Mineral Minerals composed of a single element.
Ion An atom in a charged condition either negative or positive.
Ionic Bond The force of attraction between oppositley charged particles.
Metals Elements that lose electrons easily and form positivly charged particles.
Nonmetals Elements that gain electrons easily and form electrons.
Covalent Bond The kind of attachment where electrons are shared by atoms.
Crystal A regular geometric solid with smooth surfaces called crystal faces.
Silicates 90% of the minerals in Earth's crust.
Silica Tetrahedron The basic unit with the silicon atom in center.
