The Circulatory System: Blood Studies

QuestionAnswer
agglutinate to clump together, as when different blood types are mixed
albumin protein found in blood serum, mil, egg white. In blood this regulates the osmotic concentration
antibody an immune substance present naturally or in response to an antigen, that neutralizes foreign molecules
antigen a substance which will stimulate the production of antibodies; often a foreign protein
diastole the relaxation phase of the heart beat; the pressure in the arteries during heart relaxation
erythrocyte red blood cell that transports gasses in blood
fibrinogen blood protein that can be converted to a fibrous protein to form a clot
formed elements formed from embryonic cells, this includes erythrocytes, leucocytes, and platelets
globulin serum proteins that include antibodies
leucocyte white blood cell; produces antibodies and/or engulfs particulate material
phagocytosis active engulfing of particulate material; for example the engulfing of bacteria by leucocytes
plasma the liquid portion of the blood consisting of water, plasma proteins, glucose, urea, hormones, etc.
plasma protein proteins within the plasma that function there (globulin, albumin, fibrinogen, prothrombim)
prothrombin plasma protein essential for blood clotting
serum blood plasma minus clotting proteins; contains albumin and globulin
sphygmomanometer an apparatus to measure blood pressure; consists of an inflatable cuff and a pressure gauge
stethoscope an apparatus used to hear circulatory sounds
systole the contraction phase of a heart beat; the pressure in the arteries during the contraction phase
