digestion to convert complex, insoluble molecules into simpler, soluble ones
egestion to discharge or eliminate from the body
enzyme cell product capable of altering the rate of reaction without being consumed by the reaction
ingestion active intake of food
lipase an enzyme that converts lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
maltase an enzyme that converts maltose into simple sugars
maltose a disaccharide ("double" sugar)
peptidase a group of enzymes that convert small peptides into amino acids
peptide organic molecule consisting of two or more amino acids
pepsin enzyme that converts protein into smaller polypeptides
pepsinogen precursor molecule that is converted into pepsin when the pH is acidic
starch a complex polysaccharide; the storage molecule found in plants
trypsin a pancreatic enzyme that converts polypeptides into smaller peptide units
