digestion breakdown of complex, insoluble molecules in simpler, soluble molecules
emulslify mechanical breakdown of fat into smaller globules
feces waste of the digestive process; eliminated through anus
mucosa membrane that releases a thick secretion; here the lining of the digestive tube
mucous thick secretion that can protect against harmful chemicals and desiccation
peristalsis rhythmic contraction of visceral muscle that is responsible for the movement of material through the digestive system
serosa membrane that releases a thin, watery secretion; here the outer covering of the digestive tube
sphincter ring of visceral muscle that constricts a passage when contracted
submucosa layer of connective tissue underlying a mucous membrane; here, filled with blood vessels
villus finger-like projection of the inner membrane of the intestine; increases surface area and absorption
What is the function of the liver? makes bile for emulsifying fat and stores glycogen
What is the function of the pancreas? makes enzymes for digestion of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
What is the function of the cardiac sphincter? prevents food from "backing up" into esophagus when stomach contracts to force food into the duodenum
What is the function of the gall bladder? stores bile from the liver
What is the function of the stomach? stores food and begins protein digestin using pepsin
What is the function of the villus? increases surface area and absorption of the inner membrane of the intestine
List in order the sections of the small intestine. duodenum, jejunum, and ileum
About how long is the duodenum? about 12 inches
About how long is the jejunum? about 10 feet
