Tissues of the Human Body

QuestionAnswer
basement membrane that upon which epithelial cells rest
collagenous fibers thick filaments of protein found in connective tissues; lightly staining
columnar cells that have a height significantly greater than their width
connective tissue contains cells embedded in a proteinaceous matrix that was secreted by the cells; joins one tissue to another
cuboidal cells that have a height that is roughly equivalent to their width
elastic fibers long think filaments of protein found in matrix of connective tissue; stain darkly
epithelium a lining or covering of a part of the body; always has a free surface
matrix extracellular secretion of cells within connective tissue; cells "float" in this matrix
organ combination of several tissues united to perform a specific function or group of functions
organ system combination of several organs united to perform a specific function or group of functions
pseudostratified appears to be mulilayered epithelial tissue, but in reality each cell rests on the basement membrane; illusion is result of cells that are of different heights
simple tissue single layer of cells
squamous flat cells
stratified multilayered epithelial tissue; bottom layer rests on basement membrane, top layer has a free surface
tissue a group of closely related cells united to carry out of specific function.
What are some examples of epithelial tissues? kidney tubule, intestine, esophagus, and the trachea
What are some examples of connective tissues? cartilage, bone, tendon, adipose, and blood
What are some examples of muscular tissues? skeletal, cardiac, and visceral
What are some examples of nervous tissues? spinal chord
