Lab 24

reproduction of flowering plants

QuestionAnswer
accessory fruit composed of tissues other than the flower ovary (apple or pear)
aggregate fruit composed of multiple ovaries from the same flower (raspberry and blackberry)
apomixis reproduction in which fruits and seeds are produced without gamete fusion.
asexual reproduction any reproduction that does not involve gamete fusion
bulb short underground stem with fleshy leaf bases (onion)
coevolution parallel adaptations in two species whose survival depends on one another
corm short, thickened underground stem with thin leaf bases (gladiolus)
cross-pollination pollen is transferred to pistil of a different plant of the same species
dioecious plant capable of producing sperm or eggs but not both
imperfect flower that can produce sperm or eggs but not both
meristem region of cell division
monoecious plant that can produce both sperm and eggs
multiple fruit formed from several ovaries of different flowers (pineapple)
perfect flower that can produce both sperm and eggs
rhizome horizontal underground stem (banana and johnson grass)
rootstock plant that can be used as the root donor in a graft
self-pollination pollen is transferred to pistil on the same plant
sexual reproduction any reproduction in which there is a fusion of genetic material
simple fruit formed from a single ovary
stolon horizontal stem above ground (runners of grasses)
sucker shoot growing from an underground root
tuber underground stem thickened for food storage (potato)
vegetative propagation asexual reproduction of a plant, including cuttings of stems, roots, etc.
What is an advantage of apomixis? an advantage of this asexual reproduction is a higher success rate of reproduction
what is an advantage of dioecious plants? because dioecious plants have male and female flowers on separate plants, cross-pollination is required. This allows more genetic variation
what is an advantage of perfect flowers? the ability to self-pollinate
what is an advantage of sexual reproduction? any reproduction in which there is a fusion of genetic material allows tremendous genetic variation and defense against rapidly changing environments
What are three ways of fruit and seed dispersal? fruits entice animals to eat them and then defecate the seeds in a different location. some fruits and seeds have wings that allow them to drift through the air or spines that attach to the fur of a mammal.
