mastoid process breast-shaped projection near the base of the temporal bone that houses the middle and inner ears
tympanic membrane a membrane-covered disk that receives sound waves, amplifies them, and transmits them to the first ossicle, the malleus; aka eardrum (TM)
tympanic cavity a small, air-filled cavity between the inside wall of the eardrum and the inner ear
tinnitus a ringing or buzzing sensation in the ears
vertigo a sensation of dizziness
cerumen impaction excessive buildup of earwax in the external auditory canal
Meniere's disease a chronic disease of the inner ear that includes symptoms of dizziness and ringing in the ears
antibiotic otic solutions antibacterial and anti-inflammatory eardrops treat otitis externa
antiemetics reduce nausea associated with vertigo
anti-inflammatory otics reduce inflammation, edema, and pruritus associated with otitis externa
