Chapter 5 Vocabulary

Energy The ability to do work or change.
Work Any time you exert force on an object that causes the object to move
Power The rate at which work is done.
Kinetic Energy The energy an object has due to its motion.
Potential Energy Energy that results from an object's shape or position.
Gravitational Potential Energy (gpe) Potential energy related to an object's height.
Elastic Potential Energy (epe) Potential energy that is associated with objects that can be compressed or stretched.
Mechanical Energy The form of energy associated with the motion, position, and shape of an object.
Sound Energy A disturbance that travels through a medium as a wave.
Nuclear Energy Energy that is stored in the nucleus of an atom
Thermal Energy The total kinetic and potential energy of the particles in an object.
Electromagnetic Energy A form of energy that travels through space in waves.
Chemical Energy Potential energy stored in chemical bonds. (What holds atoms together)
Energy Transformation A change from one form of energy to another.
The Law of Conservation of Energy The law that states that when one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is lost in the process.
