| Term | Definition |

| Ecology | study of organisms and how they interact |
| Habitat | Place where an organism lives. |
| Community | two or more different types of organisms in the same area. |
| Ecosystem | Includes organisms and their surroundings. |
| Producer | Plants are producers because they produce their own food. |
| Consumer | Animals are consumers because they cannot make their own food, but must consume (eat) their food. |
| herbivore | eat plants |
| carnivore | eat animals |
| omnivore | eat both plants and animals |
| decomposers | feed on decaying matter |
| food chain | representation of who eats whom in a habitat or community. |
| food web | graphical description of feeding relationships in a community (who eats whom - interconnected food chains) |
| symbiotic relationship | A close ecological relationship between two species. |
| commensalism | symbiotic relationships in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected. |
| mutualism | symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit. |
| parasitism | symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed. |
