Ecology

TermDefinition
Ecology study of organisms and how they interact
Habitat Place where an organism lives.
Community two or more different types of organisms in the same area.
Ecosystem Includes organisms and their surroundings.
Producer Plants are producers because they produce their own food.
Consumer Animals are consumers because they cannot make their own food, but must consume (eat) their food.
herbivore eat plants
carnivore eat animals
omnivore eat both plants and animals
decomposers feed on decaying matter
food chain representation of who eats whom in a habitat or community.
food web graphical description of feeding relationships in a community (who eats whom - interconnected food chains)
symbiotic relationship A close ecological relationship between two species.
commensalism symbiotic relationships in which one organism benefits and the other is not affected.
mutualism symbiotic relationship in which both organisms benefit.
parasitism symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits and the other is harmed.
