The phases of the moon depend on what? How much of the sunlit side of the Moon faces Earth
What happens after the last full moon after 29.5 days? It restarts
When the moon's shadow hits the earth, what occurs? an eclipse
What are the two types of eclipses? solar and lunar
When does a solar eclipses occur? when the moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight from Earth
What is the umbra? The very darkest part of the moon's shadow that is cone shaped
Is there light in the umbra? no because it blocked by the moon
Do people outside the umbra get solar eclipses? No just the ones in it
What is a Corona? The faint outer atmosphere of the sun
what is the larger part of the shadow called? penumbra
Do people in the penumbra see only a partial eclipse? Yes
when does a lunar eclipse occur? at a full moon when Earth is directly between the Earth and the Sun
What happens during a lunar eclipse? Earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon
Why does a lunar eclipse only happen during a full moon? Because the Moon is closer to the Earth's shadow at that time
Does Earth have a penumbra and umbra? Yes
Are you more likely to see a total lunar eclipse than total solar eclipse? Yes
When does a partial lunar eclipse occur? When the moon passes partly into the umbra of Earth's shadow
What is a tide? the rise and fall of ocean water that occurs every 12.5 hours or so
What are tides caused by? differences in how much the moon's gravity pulls on different parts of Earth
What is a spring tide? When the combined forces of the moon and the sun pull in the same direction and create a tide with the difference between consecutive low and high tides
What is a neap tide? a tide with the least difference between consecutive low and high tides
When do neap tides occur? twice a month
