| divergent evolution | closely related species that evolve in different directions |
| coevolution | evolution toward similar features in unrelated species |
| microevolution | generation to generation change in allele frequency |
| vestigal | leftover body parts from early ancestors |
| analogous | perform similar function but are not alike in structure |
| punctuated equilibrium | life changes slowly then quick periods of evolutionary change |
| adaptive radiation | one ancestral species evolves into many |
| background extinction | extinctions occur at a low continual rate |
| stabilizing selection | narrow range of phenotypes |
| directional selection | one extreme eliminated, favors other extreme |
| disruptive selection | extreme phenotypes are favored |
| normal distribution | most of the population is the mean |
| gene flow | movement of alleles between populations |
| allele | form of a gene |
| gene pool | all alleles in a group |
| allele frequency | how common an allele is in a gene pool |
