Notes about water

TermDefinition
Permeable Materials that allow water to pass through easily
Impermeable Materials that do not allow water to pass through easily
Saturated Zone The permeable layer that becomes filled with water
Water Table The level of the top of the water in the saturated zone
Unsaturated Zone The layer of rocks and soil above the water table
Aquifer An underground layer of rock or sediment where water has collected
Artesian Well A well in which water rises because of pressure within the aquifer
Tributaries The streams and rivers that feed into a main river
Watershed The land area that supplies water to a river system
Divide A ridge of land that separates one watershed from another
Reservoir A lake that stores water for human use
Nutrients Substances that enable plants and algae to grow
Eutrophication A process in which over many years the nutrients build up in a lake
