Evolution chapter 11

TermDefinition
Covergent Evolution Evolution toward similar features in unrelated species
Divergent Evolution closely related species evolve in different directions
Coevolution species that evolve in response to each other
Background Extinction Extinctions that occur on a small scale and continuously
Mass Extinction extinctions that are rare and happen at a global level
Punctuated Equillibrium gradualism + catastrophism, life is normal and then periods of quick evolutionary change happen
Adaptive Radiations one ancestrial species evolves into several different species (galapagos finches)
Microevolution generation to generation change in the allele freguencies in a population
Homologous Structures structures in two different species that have similar features but have different functins
Analogous Structures structures in two different species that have the same function but different structures
Vestigial Structures leftover structures that had a use in early ancestors but do not have a use today
Extinction elimination of a species
Stabilizing Selection almost all of the population is the average phenotype, narrow graph
Directional Selection one extreme allele becomes more common than before
Disruptive Selection both extremes become more common than the used to be average allele
Normal Distribution population contains extremes but mainly the population is average
Genetic Drift change in allele frequencies due to change
Bottleneck Effect occurs when a drastic event reduces the population to only a few
Founder Effect Occurs when a few individuals start a new population
Gene Flow movement of genes between populations
Behavioral Isolation isolation caused by differences in mating rituals
Temporal Isolation isolation caused by timing
Geographic Isolation isolation caused by a physical boundary
Allele different forms of a gene
Allele Frequency how common a single allele is in a certain population
Gene pool every allele in a population combined
Speciation a new species evolves from a single original species

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
