QuestionAnswer
Name two characteristics of minerals Hardness & Crystal structure.
Crystal Structure Is a definite pattern in the way that particles in a substance are arranged.
Hardness Is the ability of a mineral to resist being scratched.
Friedrich Mohs developed what A system for comparing the hardness of a mineral to 10 common minerals. It's called Mohs Hardness scale.
Luster Describes how a mineral reflects light from its surface.
Cleavage Is the tendency of a mineral to break along a flat surface where layers of atoms are attached weakly to each other.
Fracture Is the tendency of a mineral to break in a way that is not along a flat surface.
Minerals are considered to be Naturally occurring
Minerals are Inorganic
Compound A substance formed when two or more elements combine and lose their distinct properties.
Streak The color's of a mineral's powder
Flourescence A minerals ability to grow under ultraviolet light
Color Observe surface of mineral
Density Find Mass per unit volume
Crystallization The process by which atoms are arranged to form a material with a crystal structure
What are two ways a mineral can minerals form 1.Crystallization of molten material 2.Crystallization of materials dissolved in water
What effects the size of a crystal The size of the crystal depends on the rate at which the magma cools.
Why does magma that cools deep below the surface have large crystals? Cools slower & has a longer period of time to grow.
Solution A mixture in which one substance dissolves in another
How do veins form? solutions of hot & metals often flow through cracks within the rock. Then the metals crystallize into veins that resemble the streaks of fudge in vanilla ice cream.
geode is a rounded, hollow rock that is often lined with mineral crystals.
