electricity and magnetism
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| electric charge | is a property that leads to electromagnetic interactions between the particles that make up matter |
| static electricity | is the buildup of electric charge on an object |
| electrical conductor | is a material through which charges can move more freely |
| electrical insulator | is a material through which charges cannot move easily |
| semiconductor | are a special class of materials that conduct electric charge better than electrical insulators but not as well electrical conductors |
| electric current | the rate of flow of electric charges |
| voltage | is the amount of work required to move each unit of charge between two points |
| resistance | the opposition to the flow of electric charge |
| electric circuit | is a complete, closed path through which electric charges can flow |
| series circuit | all parts are connected in a row that forms on path for the electric charges to follow |
| parallel circuit | electric charges have more than on path that they can follow |
| magnet | to describe any material that attracts iron or objects made of iron |
| magnetic force | when you bring two magnets together, they exert a push or pull |
| magnetic pole | two magnets can push each other apart |
| magnetic field | the area surrounding a magnet where magnetic forces can be detected |
| electromagnetism | results when electric currents and magnetic fields interact with each other |
| electromagnet | a coil that has a soft iron core and that acts as a magnet when an electric current is in the coil |
