Describe Organisms Organisms begin as a single cell. Unicellular organisms grow by cell division. Multi-cellular organisms grow by cell division. The difference between small and large organisms in the number of cell not the size of the cells.
What are the two types of cell division? Eukaryotic cell division consists of: -Mitosis, the division of the nucleus and cytokinesis, the division of the cytoplasm -Meiosis, the division of sex cells (gametes) produced after reducing the chromosome # by half
Describe Mitosis? Mitosis is cell division that results in two genetically identical 'daughter' cells Occurs in somatic cells Each daughter cell receives identical DNA Divided into four or five distinct stages
Describe Chromosones? -Every organism has a specific number of chromosomes -Species specific number of chromosomes -Consist of chromatin - densely packed DNA and protein
Describe Chromosones? -In preparation for cell division, DNA is replicated and chromosomes condense -Identical pairs of chromosomes are connected by centromeres
