Chapter 7 Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell | Basic unit of all organisms |
| Cell Theory | The theory that 1. all organisms are composed of one or more cells, the cell is the basic unit of structure and organization of organism, all cells come from preexisting cells |
| Compound Light Microscope | instrument that uses light and a series of lenses to magnify objects in steps |
| Electron Mircoscope | instrument that uses a beam of electrons instead of light to mangify structure up to 500,000 times actual size |
| Eukaryote | Unicellular or unicellular organisms |
| Nucleus | Central membrane bound organelle that manages or controls cellular functions |
| Organelle | Small specialized structures |
| Fluid Mosaic Model | Structural model of the plasma membrane where molecules are free to move sideways within a lipid layer |
| Phospholipid | A glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains and phosphate group. When a phosphate group replaces a fatty acid. |
| Plasma Membrane | The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment |
| Selective Permeability | A process in which a membrane allows some molecules to pass through and others out. |
| Transport Proteins | Molecules that span the entire membrane that help form the selective membrane and regulates which molecules enter and exit |
| Cell Wall | A fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protectoin |
| Chlorophyll | traps light energy in plants |
| Cholorplast | Cell organelles that capture light energy and convert it into chemical energy |
| Chromatin | stranDs of the genetic material DNA |
| Cilia | Short numerous projections that look like hairs |
| Cytoplasm | clear gelationous fluid inside a cell |
| Cytoskeleton | support system inside the cell |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | the site of cellular chemical reactions |
| Flagella | longer projections that move with a whip-like motion |
| Golgi Apparatus | a flattened stack of tubular membranes that modify the protiens |
| Lysosome | organelles that contain digestive enzymes |
| Microfliament | smaller solid protein fibers |
| Microtubule | thin hollow cylinders made of protein |
| Mitochondria | membrane bound organelles in plant and animal cells that transform energy for the cell |
| Nucleulos | makes ribosomes |
| Plastid | used for storage |
| Ribosome | sites where the cell producers proteins according to the directions of DNA |
| Vacuole | temporary storage of materials |
| Prokaryote | Unicellular organisms that dont have a membrane bound organelles |
