Body Organisation
molecules, cells, tissues, organ and organ systems, major regions, cavities
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 6 Characteristics of life? | Organisation, Metabolism, Responsiveness, Growth, Development (Cell differentiation, Morphogenesis), Reproduction |
| 6 Structural Organisations in Body? | Chemical (Atoms>molecules&compounds), Cells, Tissues(4), Organs, Organ Systems, Organisms (11 mutually dependent organ system) If one gets paralysed, all are. |
| 3 Body Positions? | Anatomic: Standing erect with palms forward. Supine: Lying face up Prone: Lying face down |
| 4 Planes to section body? | Median : through Midline Frontal: Body into anterior and posterior Transverse: Body into superior&inferior Oblique: into oblique systems |
| Sectioning an Organ? | Longitudinal: along the length Cross/Transverse: right angle Oblique: any but a right angle |
| 4 Main Body Cavities? | Cranial: lined by meninges- brain. Thoracic: lined by pleura- heart, lungs, thumus Abdomino(Pelvic): lines by peritoneum- liver, stomach, pancreas, rectum. Seperated from thoracic by diaphragm. Vertebral Canal: lined by meninges- spinal cord. |
| 4 Primary Tissues? | Epithelial- protect Connective- connect Muscle- movement Nervous- communication |
| Functions of Epithelial tissue? | Covering: protection from damage and dehydrations (skin) Secretion of body fluids: glandular epithelium Absorption or reabsorption of nutrients: intestinal. |
| Functions of Connective Tissue? | Binding&Structural suppoer- bones, cartilage Protections: Bones Transport: blood Insulation: adipose tissue Immunity: lymphatic tissue |
| Classification of Connective Tissues? | CT proper: Soft Hard CT: cartilage, bones. Specialised CT: Adipose ct: hypodermis, liquid CT: blood |
| Specialised Connective Tissue? | Adipose/Fatty tissue- brown- has more blood capillaries&mitochondira for heat protection. White- thermal insulation&energy store. Liquid CT: blood- liquid CT links all body cells, Lymphoid- in lympatic tissue |
| Function of Muscle tissue? | produce body movement, stabilize body positions, produce heat. |
| 3 types of muscle tissues? | Striated muscles : Skeletal- voluntary movement, all linked to skeleton Cardiac- involuntary, middle layer of heart, for heart beat. Smooth- internal organs, involuntary contraction of viscera. |
| Functions of Nervous Tissue? | Sensory Reception via sensory neurones. Control of voluntary movement via motor neurones to skeletal muscles: brain and spine. Higher mental activities- memory, intelligence. |
| 2 types of nervous tissue? | Excitable tissue- consists of neurones- carry electrical impulses Non excitable tissues- consists of glial cells, support, nutrition of nerve cells. |
