| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| cell | The basic units of living organisms |
| cell theory | is made up of three main ideas about cells |
| compound right microscopes | use a series of lenses to magnify objects in ssteps |
| electron microscope | uses a beam of electrons instead of light to magnify structures |
| eukaryote | cells that makeup most multi-cellular organisms |
| nucleus | the central membrane bound organelle thaat manages or controls cellular funcction |
| organelles | small things found in all cells |
| prokaryotes | things that do not have a membrane |
| fluid mosaic model | the model of the plasma membrane |
| phospholipid | has a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a phosphate group |
| plasma membrane | The flexible boundary between the cell and its environment, to allow a steady supply of these nutrients to come into the cell no matter what the external conditions are. |
| selective permeability | a process in which a membrane allows some molecule to pass through while keeping others not |
| transport proteins | more needed substances or waste materials through the plasma membrane |
| cell wall | is a fairly rigid structure located outside the plasma membrane that provides additional support and protection |
| chlorophyll | traps light energy and gives leaves and stems their green color |
| chloroplast | are cell organelles tat capture light energy and convert it to chemical energy |
| chromatin | which are strands of genetic material |
| cilin | are short, numerous projections that look like hairs |
| cytoplasm | is the clear, gelatinous fluid outside a cell |
| cytoskeleton | cells support structure |
| endoplasmic retiulum | is the site of cellular chemical reactions |
| flasella | are longer projections that move with a whip like motion |
| Golgi apparatus | after proteins are made, they are transferred to another organelle . |
| lysosome | are organelles that contain digestive enzymes |
| microfilament | are smaller, solid protein fibers |
| microtubule | are thin, hollow cylinders made of proteins |
| mitochondria | are membrane bound organelles in plant and animal cells that transform energy for the cell. |
| nucleolus | prominent organelle inside the nucleus |
| plastid | used for storage |
| ribosome | are the sites where the cell produces proteins according to the directions of dna |
| vacuole | temporary storage of materials |
