QuestionAnswer
what are the smallest cells? mytoplasm
what is mytoplasm? bacteria
what are the largest cells? bir eggs
why does surface area matter must be adequate
name two things every cell has plasma membrane and organelles
name two things that not all cells have nucleus, membrane bound organelles
what is the first thing organelles do? allow metabolic activities in carious conditions
name the second thing organelles do increase surface area for metabolic activities
which type of cell has a nucleus and organnelles Eukaryotic
which type of cell lacks a nucleus and organelles Prokaryotic
all nuclei have what? cell membrane, DNA/chromosones, cytoplasm, watery gel, ribosomes-RNA and protein that do protein that do protein synthesis
what is a the only type of prokaryotic cell? bacteria
what is the size of a eucaryotic cell compared to Procaryotics 10 times bigger
where is the DNA located? the nucleoid
how does DNA control cell activities? protein synthesis
what is a chromatin proteins forming long fibers to which nuclear DNA is attatched
what is chromosome? coiled up chromosome
what is a nuclear envelpe double membrane with pores
what is the nucleolus consists mostly of RNA and proteins; finctions in synthesis of ribosomes
what are organelles made of? interrelated membranes
what are small membrane sacs called? vesciles
what is the major funtion of the endomembrane system? dividing the cell into sperate compartments
smmoth ER (contains/lacks) ribosomes lacks
smooth ER (contains/lacks) enymes contains
what are smooth ER's funtions synthesize lipids and can store calcium
rough ER (contains/lacks) ribosomes contains
describe the location of rough ER continuous with nuclear envelope
what are the functions of rough ER? making more membranes and to modify proteins to be transported to other organelles or to be secreted by the cell
describe golgi bodies stacks of flattened sacs formed of membranes
how is the number of stacks related to? how active the cell is in secreting proteins
what is the function of golgi bodies process cellular secretions made by ER (modifies them) and packages them for secretion
what are lysosomes? digestive compartments within a cell
what do lysosomes contain? digestive hydrolytic enzymes
what are lysosomes made by? ER then modified by golgi bodies
what would happen if lysosomes are ruptured? the cell would digest itself
when does someone get a lysosomal starage disease happen? when a person is missing one or more of the enzmes normally found in the lysosome
what happens to abnormal lysosomes? fill with indigestible substances, interfering with cell funtions
what is Tay-Sach's disease? a fatal disease that effects the nervous system.
what groups of people are Tay-Sachs disease found among? jewish, irish, french-canadian, and cajun

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
