| Term | Definition |

| Continental shelf | part of a continent that slopes gently away from the shoreline |
| Continental slope | steep ending of a continent between the continental shelf and the deep ocean floor |
| Mid-ocean ridge | an underwater mountain range |
| Rift | an area between two faults/cracks in Earth’s crust where the land is separating; forms a valley along the mid-ocean ridge |
| Trench | long, V-shaped canyon on the ocean floor |
| Ocean Basin | the deepest part of the ocean floor; made up of low hills and flat plains |
| Abyssal plain | large, flat area of the ocean basin |
| Beaches | land areas along a coastline where the surface material is mostly sand |
| Shoreline | where the land meets the ocean |
| Barrier Island | sea islands along a coastline that protect the mainland from waves, tides, and severe storms |
| Estuary | The wide lower end of a river where it flows into the ocean; has a mixture of fresh and saltwater; most SC rivers enter the ocean through the salt water estuaries |
| Inlet | indentations along the coastline where tides affect the flow of water; channels in the inlet often interconnect and somewhere provide access to the open ocean |
