| skeletal system | made up of 206 bones that give the body structure and support |
| skeleton | basic framework of the body |
| bone | give structure and support; cover and protect organs inside the body |
| bone marrow | spaces in the large bones of the body contain soft connective tissue; red blood cells are produced here |
| calcium | used in your body to build strong bones |
| cartilage | softer connective tissue; flexible but tough that provides a "cushion" in different parts of the body |
| ligament | tissue connects bone to bone |
| muscle | pull the bones to produce movement |
| rib | protects the heart and lungs |
| skull | protects the brain |
| tendon | bands of connective tissue that attach muscle to bone |
| vertebrae | bones stacked one on top of the other; held together with ligaments |
| spine | "back bone"; supports our body; made up of a number of vertebrae, protects the spinal cord |
