Skeletal System

TermDefinition
skeletal system made up of 206 bones that give the body structure and support
skeleton basic framework of the body
bone give structure and support; cover and protect organs inside the body
bone marrow spaces in the large bones of the body contain soft connective tissue; red blood cells are produced here
calcium used in your body to build strong bones
cartilage softer connective tissue; flexible but tough that provides a "cushion" in different parts of the body
ligament tissue connects bone to bone
muscle pull the bones to produce movement
rib protects the heart and lungs
skull protects the brain
tendon bands of connective tissue that attach muscle to bone
vertebrae bones stacked one on top of the other; held together with ligaments
spine "back bone"; supports our body; made up of a number of vertebrae, protects the spinal cord
