dependent variable the variable in a functional relationship that varies as a result of changes in the independent variable; the responding variable in an experiment
hypothesis a casual explanation of a natural phenomenon
independent variable the variable in a functional relationship that is believed to be the cause of changes in other variables; the manipulated variable in an experiment
cell basic unit of all living things
cell membrane a flexible covering that surrounds the cell and separates cytoplasm from the external environment; also surrounds most organelles
chloroplast membrane-bound organelle in which photosynthesis occurs
cytoplasm term used to refer to contents of a cell other than the nucleus
endoplasmic reticulum membranous sacs and channels in cells, often bearing ribosomes (designated "rough ER" if ribosomes are present and "smooth ER" if there are no ribosomes)
Golgi body membrane-bound organelle in which materials are assembled and modified prior to secretion from the cell
mitochondra membrane-bound organelle in which metabolism occurs
nucleus membrane-bound organelle which contains chromosomes and nucleolus
phospholipid cell membrane molecule composed of fatty acids and phosphate groups
protein large molecules composed of chains of amino acids; provide structural support in cell membranes and act as enzymes
ribosome small particle of proteins and nucleic acids which is the site of protein synthesis
enzyme a biological catalyst; virtually all enzymes are proteins
metabolism term to describe the collection of chemical reactions that occur in organisms
