Rocks & Soils 3rd Grade Review
| Term | Definition |

| What are the three types of soil? | Sand, Silt, and Clay |
| What are the differences between the types of soil? | Partical size. |
| Humus | Small bits of dead plant and animal remains. |
| Sand | has largest particle size. Rough to touch. The color depends on the kinds of minerals in it. Allows water to pass through easily. |
| Clay | Smallest particles. Sticky and smooth. It can be different colors. Hard for water to pass through easily. |
| Silt | Particles are larger than clay, but smaller than sand. Feels smooth. It holds little water. Rivers carry it. When water floods the land, this is left behind. |
| Loam | Mixture of sand, silt, clay and other materials. It is very good for growing plants. It is used as potting soil. |
| What are the three kinds of rocks? | Igneous Rock, Sedimentary Rock, and Metamorphic Rock |
| Igneous Rock | Rock formed from hot, melted material that is found below the surface of the Earth. |
| Magma | Hot melted material below the Earth. |
| Lava | Hot melted material above the Earth’s surface. |
| Sedimentary Rock | Rock made up of tiny bits of rocky material. |
| Metamorphic Rock | These rocks may be igneous or sedimentary rock which change due to heat and pressure. |
| classification | Grouping objects into two groups based on whether they have some property or not. |
| observation | Something you detect through the use of one or more of your senses. |
| inference | When you make a guess about what happened based on observations and what you already know. |
| prediction | An idea about what will happen in the future with an explanation of why. |
| testable question | A question in which an experiment is needed to find an answer. |
| measure | To compare an unknown amount with a known unit to determine its dimensions, mass, capacity, temperature, speed, quantity, or extent. |
| scientific observation | An observation in which the result will always be the same. |
| variable | A factor that is deliberately changed in an investigation. |
| temperature | A quantitative property that tells how mch heat something has. |
| communicate | To use written or spoken words, graphs, demonstrations, drawings, diagrams, or data tables to share information and ideas with others. |
| unscientific observation | An opinion, everyone may not agree. |
| sequential | Placing objects or events in order according to a particular property. OR Placing objects or events in order based on what occured first, second, and so forth. |
