TermDefinition
interdependence The relationship where organisms need each other in order to survive.
food chain The path of food energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem.
food web Overlapping food chains with different pathways for the flow of food energy in an ecosystem.
predator An animal that hunts, catches, and eats other animals.
prey An animal that is hunted, caught, and eaten by another animal.
competition The struggle of organisms against each other to get the same resources; the effort by an organism to obtain food, water, and space used or defended by another organism.
herbivore An animal that eats only plants and plant products.
omnivore An animal that eats both plants and animals.
carnivore An animal that eats other animals.
decomposer An organism that gets energy by feeding on dead materials and wastes.
