| interdependence | The relationship where organisms need each other in order to survive. |
| food chain | The path of food energy from one organism to another in an ecosystem. |
| food web | Overlapping food chains with different pathways for the flow of food energy in an ecosystem. |
| predator | An animal that hunts, catches, and eats other animals. |
| prey | An animal that is hunted, caught, and eaten by another animal. |
| competition | The struggle of organisms against each other to get the same resources; the effort by an organism to obtain food, water, and space used or defended by another organism. |
| herbivore | An animal that eats only plants and plant products. |
| omnivore | An animal that eats both plants and animals. |
| carnivore | An animal that eats other animals. |
| decomposer | An organism that gets energy by feeding on dead materials and wastes. |
