Chapter 12 Vocabulary Mrs. Millians

TermDefinition
Salinity The amount of salt in water
Water pressure The downward push of water in a given area
Continental shelf The part of the ocean floor the drops gently
Continental slope The part of the ocean floor that drops steeply
Abyssal plain A large flat area on the ocean floor
Wave A disturbance that carries energy through matter or space
Current water that flows like a river toward the ocean
Tide The repeated rise and fall of the water level of the ocean
Shore The area where water and land meet and interact
Headland A point of land where hard rock is left and other materials are washed away
Tide pool A temporary pool of water that gets trapped when the tide goes out
Jetty A wall-like structure that prevents sand from being washed away
