| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| elements | the ingredients that make up all the other substances |
| metals | conductors of electricity and heat |
| nonmetals | metals that don't conduct heat very well |
| semimetals | sometimes like nonmetals and sometimes like metals |
| atom | the smallest part of an element and still have the properties of an element |
| atomic theory | the idea that everything is made of atoms |
| compound | a type of matter made of two or more elements |
| molecule | the smallest part of a compound but still acts like a compound |
| proton | determines what an element will be (positive charge) |
| neutron | no charge |
| electron | negative charge |
| solid | substance that has a definite shape and volume |
| liquid | substance that has a definite volume but no definite shape |
| gas | substance with no definite shape or volume |
| melting point | point where a solid turns to a liquid |
| evaporation | when a solid or a liquid become a gas |
