What is Weather? The state of the atmosphere at any particular time.
What is Climate? The typical weather of an area over a long period of time
What are the 4 elements of weather? temperature, humidity, air pressure, and wind.
What is the name of a person who studies weather? meteorologist
What forms when moisture evaporates into the air, and then cools? A cloud
What impact does ocean have on climate? It tends to make temperatures in coastal areas less extreme.
Why is the temperature lower at night than during the day? The temperature depends on the energy from the sun.
Why does it tend to be cool at the Earth's poles? The sun does not shine directly on the poles.
When air pressure is high (a high pressure system) what type of weather will occur? Clear skies and sun.
When there is a lot of moisture (humidity) in the air and the temperature drops, what will happen? It will rain.
What happens when warm and cool air mix? Clouds, wind and storms will develop.
What causes wind? The movement of air - warm air rising and cold air sinking.
What are 4 examples of precipitation? Rain, snow, sleet, and hail
Why do scientists measure and predict weather? So people can make plans.
What does a thermometer measure? Temperature
What does a hygrometer measure? Humidity
What does an anemometer measure? Speed of the wind
What does a barometer measure? Air Pressure
What does a wind vane measure? Direction of the wind
What does a rain gauge measure? Amount of rain that has fallen
How does a wind vane work? When the wind blows, it moves the vane. It tells which way the wind is blowing from.
What is the difference between climate and weather? Weather is the state of the atmosphere at a particular time. Climate is the weather pattern over time. Climate is what you expect to happen; weather is what actually happens daily.
What does the Jet Stream do? It separates the warm air to the south from the cold air to the north.
What does the Gulf Stream do? It brings warmer water along the east coast making the air temperature warmer and the air more humid.
Why does Boston have a high amount of moisture? It is close to the ocean.
