Chapter 13 - Vocabulary

| Water Cycle | continuous movement of water from the ocean to the atmosphere to the land and back to the ocean |
| evaporation | liquid water becomes water vapor (a gas) |
| condensation | water vapor (a gas) in the air turns into liquid water |
| precipitation | rain, snow, sleet, or hail falls from clouds in the sky |
| transpiration | some water within plants evaporates into the atmosphere |
| groundwater | water that is stored in the soil |
| desalinization | the measure of the amount of dissolved salts in a given amount of liquid |
| continental shelf | begins at the shoreline and slopes gently toward the open ocean - It continues until the ocean floor begins to slope more steeply downward. |
| continental slope | begins at the edge of the continental shelf. It continues down to flattest part of the ocean floor |
| continental rise | base of the continental slope- made of large piles of sediment |
| mid ocean ridges | mountain chains that form when tectonic plates pull apart |
| seamounts | an individual mountain of volcanic material - forms when magma pushes its way through or between tectonic plates |
| ocean trench | huge cracks in the deep ocean basin. Ocean trenches form where one oceanic plate is pushed beneath a continental plate or another oceanic plate. |
| abyssal plain | the broad, flat part of the deep ocean basin |
