living or once-living parts of an ecosystem biotic factors
non-living parts of an ecosystem abiotic factors
a group of organisms that can mate and produce fertile offspring species
a living thing organism
the place where an organism lives that contains everything the organism needs to survive habitat
What makes an organism more or less likely to survive? genes
In order for evolution occur, what must an individual do? reproduce
the process by which individuals that are better-adapted to their environmental survive and reproduce more successfully than less well-adapted indivudals natural selection
a change in the genetic characteristics of a population from one generation to the next evolution
a trait that makes an individual more likely to survive adaptation
How do scientists classify organisms? six kingdoms
Why are nitrogen-fixing bacteria important? covert nitrogen from the atmosphere into a form that plants can use
How are bacteria and fungi similar? break down dead organisms
How are bacteria and fungi different? different cellular structures
Which kingdoms of organisms are able to get their energy directly from the sun? protists, plants
flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in fruit angiosperm
woody plant that produces seeds which are not enclosed in a fruit gymnosperm
What is a fungi? organism that breaks down other organisms and absorbs the nutrients
all organisms break down glucose to gain energy to function cellular respiration
plants use energy from the sun to make glucose photosynthesis
How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related? same reactants and products
Why are energy pyramids effective ways to visualize energy loss between trophic levels? less energy is available to organisms at higher trophic levels
Why is nitrogen important? makes up 78% of Earth's atmosphere; forms the structures of proteins
What are the causes of algal blooms? excess use of fertilizers
What are the effects of algal blooms? kills organisms in waterways
