B1 Diet

B1 Diet and exercise/health

QuestionAnswer
The movement of digested food through the intestinal wall into the blood stream. Absorption
A diet which contains all of the nutrients in the right proportion, opposite to unbalanced. Balanced
A macronutrient; a group of organic chemicals containing carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms. Include large molecules of starch and small molecules like glucose. A source of chemical energy for organisms. Carbohydrates
Cholesterol is a fatty substance found in the blood. It's mainly made in the liver, it is used in the construction of cell membranes. Cholesterol
An organism which obtains its food by eating either producers or other consumers or both. Consumer
A diet missing in a particular nutrient which leads to a specific set of symptoms eg lack of vitamin C leads to scurvy. Deficiency disease
A disease where the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin so dangerously high levels of glucose exist in the blood and body fluids. Diabetes
The process of breaking food down mechanically and chemically so it is more soluble and ready to be absorbed. Digestion
Chemical catalysts which speed up biochemical reactions. They can be extra cellular eg digestive enzymes or intracellular eg catalyse. Enzyme
Life processes which involves the removal of waste materials such as urea from the body. Excretion
The system which is responsible for removing urine from the body. Excretory
A macronutrient; Organic molecules constructed of chains of fatty acids with glycerol. A very energy rich nutrient source for organisms. Fats
Organs in the body which manufacture hormones which are then secreted into the blood. Glands
A simple sugar, rich in energy made by plants in their leaves, and used by animals as foo Glucose
An unbalanced diet produces a person who may be overweight or underweight; or may have type 2 diabetes, or a deficiency disease. This person is said to be? Malnourished
The rate at which all the chemical reactions in the cells of the body are carried out. Metabolic rate
A micronutrient; required in small doses for a wide range of different structures and processes eg Calcium is used in the construction of bone, and Iron is needed in the haemoglobin molecule, Magnesium is needed in the chlorophyll molecule. Mineral ions
Salts, compounds containing metal elements required by plants eg Iron, magnesium. Minerals
Life processes whereby organisms obtain plants produce food, animals consume food plants and other animals. Nutrition
An organ near the stomach which makes digestive enzymes and the hormone insulin. Pancreas
A Macronutrient; Organic molecules constructed of chains of amino acids, contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen atoms. Used in the construction of tissues by all organisms. Proteins
Life processes where organisms release energy from their food Respiration
A carbohydrate made up of glucose molecules linked together, it is insoluble Starch
These are medicinal drugs which are prescribed to patients to lowering the risk of heart and circulatory diseases. Statin
A micronutrient; Required in small doses for the a wide range of different structures and processes eg vitamin K for blood clotting, vitamin C for skin and gum tissue. Vitamins
All the chemical reactions in the body. Metabolism
A health condition that results from taking in too much energy. Obesity
Health conditions genetically passed on from your parents. Inherited factors
Food group used for storage, insulation and energy Fats
Lost from the body as sweat, breath, faeces, and urine. Water
Helps prevent constipation and bowel cancer. Fibre
A waxy substance obtained in your diet and made by your liver that is needed for cell membranes and to make sex hormones. Cholesterol
Drugs used to treat high cholesterol levels Statins

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
