Chapter 1 Vocabulary

Biology Chapter 1 Vocab.

TermDefinition
Biology The study of living things.
Biologists People who study biology.
Organism Anything that has or once had all the characteristics of life.
Organization They are arranged in an orderly way.
Tissues An aggregate of cells in an organism that has similar structure and function.
Cell The structural, functional and biological unit of all organisms.
Organ System A group of organs that work together to carry out a particular task.
Organ A group of tissues that perform a specific function or group of functions. (Digestion and reproduction.)
Development The process of natural changes that take place during the life or an organism.
Reproduction The production (making) of offspring(s).
Species A group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce fertile offspring.
Growth Results in the addition of mass to an organism and, in many organisms, the formation of new cells and new structures.
An organism's external environment All things surrounding it and in it.
Stimulus Anything that is part of either environment and causes some sort of reaction by the organism.
Response The reaction to a stimulus.
Homeostasis Regulation of an organism's internal conditions to maintain life.
Adaptation Any characteristic that results from changes to s species over time. It also enables species to survive.
