Scientific Method

And Components to a Lab Experiment

QuestionAnswer
Steps of the Scientific Method 1.Stating the Problem 2.Forming a Hypothesis 3.Perform a controlled experiment 4.Collect data through observations 5.Form a conclusion based on the data
Spontaneous Generation life can originate form non-living matter
Biogenesis life comes from pre-existing life
Redi's Experiment Spontaneous Generation vs Biogenesis -Uncovered jars containing meat compared to covered jars containing meat -After a few days the uncovered jars had maggots in them -Why? Flies came into contact with the meat and laid eggs in the meat
Needham's Test on Redi's Finding Thought spontaneous generation could occur-he sealed&heated a bottle of gravy, boiled it&after several days looked inside with a microscope; he saw animalcules that he claimed grew after he killed everything when he boiled the gravy
Spallanzani’s Test of Redi’s Findings Spallanzani heated the gravy longer than Needham He had two containers: one sealed and one not sealed After a few days- the open container contained “little animalcules” while the sealed one did not
Pasteur’s Test of Spontaneous Generation Pasteur developed a flask with a curve neck The curve flask prevented air from entering into the flask The broth in the flask was protected from the air containing microorganisms Even days after the broth was boiled;it still remained free of living things

Hypothesis educated guess or answer to a question or problem
Prediction an educated guess based off the hypothesis
Controlled Variables variables that are the same throughout the experiment
Independent Variable manipulated variable the one that's being tested
Dependent Variable variable being observed or measured
Control Group group being used as a comparison and doesn't get the variable being tested
Experimental Group gets the variable being tested
Level of Treatment the amount or how long the the variable is given
Repetition how many time you give the experiment
Observation and Data qualitative:how much and math, numbers quantitative:use descriptive and words
Data Charts, tables and graphs
Analysis of Data
Conclusion does your data support or reject your hypothesis? State whether the evidence supports or rejects the hypothesis
Procedures have to be precise and clear so someone else can do the experiment

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
