I have it here, Mrs. Santilli.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Theory | The theory that states that all living beings are made of either animal, bacterial, or plant cells. |
| Cell Membrane | A flexible covering that protects the inside of a cell from the environment outside. |
| Cell Wall | A stiff structure outside the cell membrane that protects the cell from outer harm. |
| Chloroplast | An organelle that provides a green color for plant cells and plant cells only |
| Golgi Apparatus | A part of a cell that packages, modifies, and distributes proteins within the cell. |
| Cytoskeleton | A microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence. |
| Central Vacuole | A membrane bound organelle that offers support to cells that aid weak parts of the organism. |
| Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum | An organelle that forms a network of membrane vesicles. It has a smooth structure. |
| Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum | An organelle that forms a network of membrane vesicles. It has a rough structure. |
| Lysosomes | Organelles with enzymes that break down protein, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids. |
| Centrioles | Protein structures exclusive to animal cells that help create spindle fibers, which guide chromosome movement during mitosis and meiosis. |
| DNA | An acid material that is or can be carried throughout reproduction and is inherited from parent to offspring. Its full name is Deoxyribonucleic Acid. |
| Flagellum | A long whiplike structure on many bacteria. |
| Capsule | A layer outside of the cell wall of a bacterial cell that is hard to wash off or remove and can be the cause of diseases. |
| Prokaryotic Cells | A cell that has genetic material that is not surrounded by a cell membrane. Bacterial cells belong to this group. |
| Eukaryotic Cells | Eukaryotic cells have a membrane surrounding their genetic material, unlike Prokaryotic cells. Animal, plant, fungi, and protists belong to this group. |
| Organelles | Organized or specialized structures used by living cells. |
| Unicellular | Having only one cell. Plankton is a unicellular example. |
| Multicellular | Having multiple cells. Owls, for example, are multicellular. |
| Nuclear Membrane | The membrane surrounding the nucleus of a cell. |
| Nuclear Envelope | The membrane in a cell that surrounds the genetic material and nucleolus of a nucleus but not the entire nucleus. |
| Nucleolus | A small, dense spherical structure in the nucleus during interphase. |
