Celled Organisms

TermDefinition
single celled organisms unicellular; made up of only one cell
multicellular made up of more than one cell; plants and animals
cell smallest part of a living thing that can carry out all the processes of life
cell/plasma membrane (animals) cell wall (plants) surrounds (protects) cell with a flexible membrane: layered coat; maintains shape of cell; controls the transport of materials in and out of the cell wall: outer, rigid protective covering; helps plant stand up
cell nucleus large round structure inside the cell; command center of the cell (controls cell function)
microorganism any organism too small to see with your eye; must use a microscope
amoeba single celled organism; eats by surrounding a food particle and then bringing the food into the cell; moves by changing its shape
bacteria very large group of single celled organisms; much smaller than the cells that make up plants and animals
cilia hair like structures that helps move paramecium; also brings in food
cytoplasm the nucleus floats in this jelly like substance; maintains shape of cell
flagella thread like structures that whip around to move the tiny organisms such as euglena and volvox; also brings in food
organism a living thing
vacuoles storage bubbles inside the cytoplasm that hold food until it can be digested
chloroplast (plants); site of photosynthesis; type of plasid, a sac that contains pigments that are used to convert the sun's energy into food for the cell
organ a grouping of tissues into a distinct structure (animals or plants)that performs a specialized task
system group of parts that work together
tissue a group of similar cells and cell products forming a definite kind of structural material with a specific function, in a multicellular organism
reproduce make more organisms of their own kind
euglena single celled organism with a whiplike part that moves forward; use sunlight to make food
paramecium single celled organism has many hairlike structures to help it move and take in food
protist single celled organisms in a pond; behave like animals

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
