Cells

TermDefinition
Animal cell The cell is the basic structural, functional and biological unit of all known living organisms.
Plant cell a cell that is a structural and functional unit of a plant.
Bacteria cell a unicellular parasite that is not a plant or an animal and reproduces through scissiparity.
Mitochondria an organelle found in large numbers in most cells.
Ribosome a minute particle consisting of RNA and associated proteins found in large numbers in the cytoplasm of living cells.
Vesicles a fluid- or air-filled cavity or sac, in particular.
Nucleus the central and most important part of an object, movement, or group, forming the basis for its activity and growth.
Chloroplast a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
Golgi apparatus complex of vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells, involved in secretion and intracellular transport.
Cell membrane the semipermeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell.
Cell wall a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria.
Cytoskeleton a microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence.
Smooth emoplasmic The endoplasmic reticulum is an organelle of cells in eukaryotic organisms that forms an interconnected network of membrane vesicles.
Rough emoplasmic A membrane network within the cytoplasm of cells involved in the synthesis, modification, and transport of cellular materials.
Lysosomes an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
Centripetal moving or tending to move toward a center.
DNA deoxyribonucleic acid, a self-replicating material present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes.
Flagellum a slender threadlike structure, esp.
Capsule a small case or container, esp.
Prokaryotic cell The prokaryotes are a group of organisms whose cells lack a membrane-bound nucleus.
Eukaryotic cell A eukaryote is an organism whose cells contain a nucleus and other structures enclosed within membranes.
Central of, at, or forming the center.
Organelles any of a number of organized or specialized structures within a living cell.
Unicellular consisting of a single cell.
Multicellular having or consisting of many cells.
Cell theory the theory that cells form the fundamental structural and functional units of all living organisms.
Nuclear membrane the double lipid bilayer membrane which surrounds the genetic material and nucleolus in eukaryotic cells.
Nuclear envelope nuclear envelope also known as the nuclear membrane
Nucleolus a small dense spherical structure in the nucleus of a cell during interphase.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
