Location Vocab

TermDefinition
reference map a map that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system.
thematic map A map that is a map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area
GPS Global positioning system
GIS a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data.(Global information system)
Distance Scale A ratio that shows the distance from place to place on a map that tells the real distance when added to the ratio
Directional Indicator a device that gives directions
Inset Map a map that shows a more detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area
Legend the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used
latitude (parallels) a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface
longitude (meridians) a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface
Equator an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°.
Prime Meridian a planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude
northern hemisphere the hemisphere that is to the north of the equator
southern hemisphere the hemisphere to the south of the equator
eastern hemisphere he hemisphere that includes Eurasia and Africa and Australia
western hemisphere the hemisphere that includes North America and South America
continents The major pieces of land mass on earth
map grid A symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates
