| reference map | a map that includes all possible valid relationships between a source system and a target system. |
| thematic map | A map that is a map or chart especially designed to show a particular theme connected with a specific geographic area |
| GPS | Global positioning system |
| GIS | a system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data.(Global information system) |
| Distance Scale | A ratio that shows the distance from place to place on a map that tells the real distance when added to the ratio |
| Directional Indicator | a device that gives directions |
| Inset Map | a map that shows a more detailed (larger scale) representation of a specific area |
| Legend | the wording on a map or diagram explaining the symbols used |
| latitude (parallels) | a geographic coordinate that specifies the east-west position of a point on the Earth's surface |
| longitude (meridians) | a geographic coordinate that specifies the north-south position of a point on the Earth's surface |
| Equator | an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres and constituting the parallel of latitude 0°. |
| Prime Meridian | a planet's meridian adopted as the zero of longitude |
| northern hemisphere | the hemisphere that is to the north of the equator |
| southern hemisphere | the hemisphere to the south of the equator |
| eastern hemisphere | he hemisphere that includes Eurasia and Africa and Australia |
| western hemisphere | the hemisphere that includes North America and South America |
| continents | The major pieces of land mass on earth |
| map grid | A symbolized network of lines, or graticule, representing parallels and meridians or plane coordinates |
