| Term | Definition |

| Superior | More to the head, or above another structure. |
| Inferior | More toward the feet or tail, or below another structure. |
| Anterior | More toward the front or belly-side of the body. |
| Posterior | More toward the back or spinal cord side of the body. |
| Medial | Refers to the middle or near the middle of the body or the structure. |
| Lateral | Refers to the side |
| Proximal | Located nearer to the point of attachment to the body. |
| Distal | Located farther away from the point of attachment to the body. |
| Superficial | More toward the surface of the body. |
| Deep | Further away from the surface of the body |
| Supine | The body lying horizontally and facing upward. |
| Prone | The body lying horizontally and facing downward. |
| Abdominal Cavity | The superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity |
| Abdominopelvic Cavity | A ventral cavity consisting of the abdominal and pelvic cavities. It contains digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs. |
| Pelvic Cavity | The inferior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity. |
| Cranial Cavity | A dorsal body cavity. It is within the skull and contains the brain. |
| Spinal Cavity | A dorsal body cavity within the spinal column that contains the spinal cord. |
| Thoracic Cavity | A ventral cavity in the chest in the chest area that contains the lung and heart. |
| Diaphragram | The major muscle of inspiration. It seperates the thoracic from the abdominal cavity. |
| Mediastinum | The central organs of the chest cavity. It contains the organs between the lungs, including the heart, aorta, esophagus, and trachea |
| Viscera | The name for the internal organs of the body, such as the lungs, stomach, and liver. |
