What is a p wave? A primary wave, push and pull, comes first
What is a s wave? A secondary wave, side to side, comes second
What is a surface wave? Goes up and down, does most destruction, comes last
What is Pangaea? A super continent
What is the most common theory? Impact theory
What is a lunar month? 29.5 days due to moons revolution around Earth
What is the capture theory? During solar systems formation a large object was captured by earths gravity
What is the simultaneous formation theory? Moon and Earth formed at the same time with the same materials
What is mare aka Maria? Ancient craters filled by volcanic eruptions , appear dark, 50% of earths surface
What are rilles? Long, curving, cracks filled with dust, look like riverbeds (lava tubes)
What are craters? Bowl shaped depression formed from impact of meteorite
What are rays? Bright streaks radiating from craters
What is regolith? (Lunar Soil) Ground up rock material made by smashing impact of meteorite
What are highlands? (Lunar Mountains) Located on rims of Maria, light in color, heavily colored craters
What are the geological eras? Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic
What is tephra? Ash, dust, blocks, bombs, lapilli
What is a half life? The amount of time it takes for a quantity to fall half in its value (decay)
What is an inconformity? Missing layers, caused by erosion
What is uranium 238? Most common isotope used to determine age of anything 500,00 years old or less
What is Carbon 14? Used in determining the age of ancient organic, geological, or archaeological
What do dendrologist study? The age of tree rings (can tell weather)
What is the age of the earth? 4.6 billion years old
What causes the formation of the earths crust? Made of sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous rocks
What is outgassing? Release of gas that has dissolved, trapped, or frozen
What is a trace fossil? Footprint, coprolites, and egg shells
What is mold/cast? Hollowed out impressions or where the mold is filled in
What is an altered hard part? Very uncommon for complete remain to exist
What is original preservation? (the whole thing) La Brea tar pits, insects in amber, mummification, and freezing
What is cyanobacteria? Phylum bacteria that obtain energy through photosynthesis
Name the phases of the moon New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning gibbous
Describe mafic Low silica, high fe and mg
Describe felsic High silica, low fe and mg
What causes an earthquake? Caused by movement along gigantic fractures in earths crust
What is shear? Stress that causes a material to twist
What is tension? Stress that pulls a material apart
What is a fault? A fracture along which movement occurs
What is ductile deformation? Deformation of materials in response to stress
What are seismic waves? Vibration of the ground during an earthquake
What is a seismometer? An instrument that detects and records seismic waves
What is an epicenter? The point on earths surface directly above the focus
What is a focus? The point underground where an earthquake originates
