Element A substance in which all the atoms are the same .
Viscosity A liquids resistance to flowing.
Silica A material find in magma.
Pahoehoe A hot, fast, moving type of lava.
aa A slow-moving type of lava.
Compound A substance in which two or more elements are chemically joined.
Lava Liquid magma that reaches the surface.
Magma The molten mixture of rock-forming.
Shield Volcano A wide, gently sloping mountain made of layers
Cindercone Volcano Cone-shaped hill or small mountain made of volcanic ash.
Composite Volcano Cone-shaped mountain in which layers of lava alternate with layers.
Crater A bowl-shaped area that forms around a volcano's central opening.
Caldera A large hole formed at the top of a volcano.
Batholith A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools.
Lava plateau Formed by highly fluid basaltic lava.
Sill A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma squeezes between layers of rock.
Dike A slab of volcanic rock formed when magma forces itself across rock layers.
Vent When molten rock and gas leave a volcano.
Pipe A long tube through which magma moves.
Hot Spot An area where magma from deep within the mantle melts through the crust above.
Ring of fire A major belt of volcanoes.
Lava flow The area covered by lava as it pours out.
Magma chamber The pocket beneath a volcano.
Geyser A fountain of water and steam.
Volcanic Ash Consists of fragments of pulverized.
Dormant A volcano that is not currently active.
Active A volcano that erupts.
Extinct A volcano that is no longer active.
Subduction A process in which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean.
