QuestionAnswer
Photosynthesis The chemical process whereby plants produce food inside their leaves
Tropism The growth of a plant in response to a condition in its environment
Fertilization The process of transferring pollen from the stamen to the pistil
Chlorophyll The pigment or coloring that gives plants their green color
Bract Serve the same function as the petal, to attract insects to the flower, but have a much different structure
Stomata Pores on the underside of the leaf
Glucose The food plants need to live
Cuticle The waxy covering that coats the skin of the leaf and prevents water from escaping
Guard Cells Each Stoma is opened and closed by two guard cells that surround the tiny opening
Cellulose A tough, fibrous material that forms a strong cell wall around each plant cell
Chloroplasts As sunlight enters the leaf, some of its energy is absorbed by tiny packages of chlorophyll called chloroplasts
Embryo Miniature, undeveloped plant made up of a tiny shoot
Botanist A scientist who studies plants
Shoot System The part of the plant visible, above ground
Root System The part of the plant located under ground
Root Cap A layer of tough protective cells covering the root
Taproot A particularly deep root
Root hair Tiny projections near the end of the root
Pistil A long tube in the middle of a flower, surrouned by petals
Petal Attract insects to the flower
Leaf Carries out photosynthesis
Flower Allows plants to reproduce
Root Absorbs water and minerals for the plant
Stem Allows liquid to move up and down the plant
Cell Wall Protects the stem
Ovary Hold the seeds, becomes fruit
Stamen Makes and hold the pollen
Veins Transport liquids and reinforces the leaf's structure
Pitcher Plant Attracts insects with its bright colors and its aroma of honey like nectar
Day Lily Long, narrow leaves and orange, trumpet like flower that lasts no longer than a day
Venue Flytrap Has tiny trigger hairs that slam the two leaves together on insects that crawl into it
Sundew Has dew drops that cause inssects to get stuck
Bladderwort Uses water containing leaves to trap insects
Grasses Small flowers, two-part leaf, reproduces without flowers (ex.sugar cane)
Pea Family Has five petals (1 large and 4 small), and fruits grow in the shape of pods (ex.legumes)
Lily Family Petals grow in multiples of 3, grow from bulbs (ex.day lily)
Rose Family Petals grow in multiples of five, includes apples and cherries
Composite Family Largest flowering family, two types of flowers make up the one flower (ex.Daisy)
