Energy Study Stack

QuestionAnswer
What are some renewable resources? Wind, solar, hydro-power, geothermal, and biomasss
What are some non-renewable resources? Nuclear, petroleum, coal, natural gas, and oil.
What are fossil fuels? A source of energy that takes thousands of years to create, such as: coal, petrolatum, and natural gas.
What are the forms of energy? Chemical, electrical, mechanical, radiant, nuclear, sound, thermal, and sound.
What are the two states of energy? Kinetic and potential.
What is force? it is strength or energy from a physical movement.
What is a Newton? A measurement of force.
What is a a Newton Meter? a measurement of movement.
What are the four factors of friction? surface area, smoothness, softness, and weight.
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy? energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change form.
What are the calculations of work? Weight x Distance
How do you reduce friction? smooth surface or lubricate surface
What is a closed system? When energy can only be transferred to other objects in the system
What is a open system? When energy can be transferred to everything.
What is a wave? An energy disturbance that travels from medium to medium.
What is a transverse wave? the particles move at right arches to the direction of wave travel
What is a longitudinal wave? the particles move parallel to the direction the wave is moving
What is a crest? the highest parts of a transverse wave
what is a trough? the lowest parts of a transverse wave
what is a medium? a material through which a wave travels through
What is frequency? the number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time
What are the 10 energy sources? water, solar, wind, plants, geothermal, coal, nuclear, oil, petroleum, and natural gas.
describe water renewable, because it can be reused again and again.
describe solar energy renewable, because the sun is always making sunlight.
describe wind energy renewable, because uneven earth's heating is always happening, so it can be renewed easily.
describe plant (biomass) renewable, since it is reproductive and plants are always growing, so it can be renewed easily.
describe geothermal renewable, because the earth will always have heat in it (because of the magma) and is produced a lot
describe coal nonrenewable, because coal takes thousands of years to make and cannot be replaced as easily.
describe fossil fuels nonrenewable, because like coal, fossil fuels take forever to replace; hence "fossils", which take millions of years to make.
describe oil nonrenewable, since oil takes thousands of years to make and cannot be replaced easily.
describe petroliumn nonrenewable, since it is formed when layers of buried plants and animals are exposed to intense heat and pressure, which is over thousands of years, so it cannot be replaced easily.
describe natural gas nonrenewable, because it takes a long time to replace.
what is thermal energy? heat energy
what is chemical energy? energy that changed because of chemical reactions
what is electrical energy? energy that is created from electricity
what is sound energy? energy from sound
what is radiant energy? energy from light
what is nuclear energy? energy that is created when atoms split apart
what is mechanical energy? moving energy
what is frequency measured in? hertz
what is amplitude? the maximum distance the particles of a medium carrying a wave away from the rest position
what is wavelength? the measurement from one trough to another, or one crest to another
what is a vibration? a rapid,continuous movement
what is a vacuum? a space entirely devoted of matter
what is pitch? the quality of a sound due to vibrations
equation of speed distance / time
waves that require a medium through which to travel is called what? a mechanical wave
waves that are spread by simultaneous periodic variations of electric and magnetic field intensity are called what? electromagnetic waves
