Valcanoe Definitions

| Element | A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. |
| Viscosity | The property of liquids. It is the resistance of a liquid to flowing. |
| Silica | The viscosity of magma depends on this. |
| Pahoehoe | Fast-moving, hot lava that has a low viscosity. |
| Aa | Lava that is cooler and slower-moving. |
| Compound | A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically combined. |
| Lava | When magma reaches the surface. |
| Magma | A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle. |
| Shield Volcano | Gently sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows. |
| Cinder Cone Volcano | Cone-shaped mountain formed from ash, cinders, and bombs. |
| Composite Volcano | Mountain formed by lava flow alternating with explosive eruptions. |
| Crater | Bowl-shaped area that forms around a volcano's central vent. |
| Caldera | Hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain. |
| Batholith | A mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust. |
| Lava Plateu | A high, level area formed by repeated lava flows. |
| Sill | When magma squeezes between horizontal layers of rock. |
| Dike | Magma that forces itself across rock layers hardens. |
| Vent | Where the magma comes out. |
| Pipe | Where magma is,before it erupts. |
| Hot Spring | When groundwater heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool. |
| Ring Of Fire | A major belt of volcanoes that rim the Pacific Ocean. |
| Lava Flow | The area covered by lava as it pours out of a volcano's vent. |
| Magma Chamber | Where the magma stays, it is generally located under the volcano. |
| Geyser | A fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground. |
| Volcanic Ash | Fine rocky particles as small as a speck of dust. |
| Dormant | Is not erupting at the moment. |
| Active | Erupting or showing signs of erupting in the near future. |
| Extinct | Unlikely to erupt again. |
| Subduction | The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary. |
