What are some characteristics of a virus that make them so different than living things? -they don't need oxygen -they don't exchange gases -not alive, they don't die -they either exist or don't exist
What is an active virus? invading & killing cells
What is a hidden virus? "just chillin" not doing anything, just present
What is the pathogenesis of a typical virus? through the eyes, nose, and mouth
How does a virus make you sick? it: enters the body, tricks cells to allow entrance, tricks nucleus to let it in, tricks nucleus to make more viruses, then kills the cell. now repeat that millions of times.
Five illnesses caused by virus: influenza, herpes zoster, norovirus, yellow fever, lassa fever
Who is credited with the first vaccine? Edward Jenner
When? 1790's
What virus was the vaccine preventing? Smallpox
Where do we get the name "vaccine"? vaca = cow
Who invented the polio vaccine? Jonas Salk
When? 1950's
