| short-term memory | stores information that happened minutes or hours ago |
| REM | stage of sleep when you begin dreaming |
| impulses | electrical signals that carry messages through the nervous system |
| backbone | bony cover that protects the spinal cord |
| spinal cord | long bundle of nerves inside the backbone |
| cerebrum | controls memory, thinking, and learning |
| cerebellum | controls balance and coordination |
| brain stem | control involuntary activities (breathing, heart rate) |
