Life Cycles

| learned behavior | a behavior that an animal develops by observing other animals or by being taught |
| inherited trait | a characteristic that is passed from parents to their offspring |
| reproduce | making more animals of the same kind |
| life cycle | the stages of growth and development that an animal goes through in its life |
| metamorphosis | the name for changes in form some insects go through during their life cycle |
| larva | The small, wormlike stage in the life cycle of some insects. |
| pupa | The stage in the life cycle of some insects when the organism changes from a larva to an adult. |
| nymph | the larva stage of some organisms that resembles the adult and develops into the adult directly, without passing through an intermediate pupa stage |
| complete metamorphosis | a life cycle with four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult |
| incomplete metamorphosis | a life cycle with three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult |
